Astronomy for Mental Health and Family Cohesion

An initiative of the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and Stellenbosch University (SU).

From 17–19 October 2025, members of the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) and Stellenbosch University’s CoCREATE Health Hub gathered in Sutherland on a research trip to study how astronomy experiences can support mental health and family connection/cohesion.

This collaborative initiative, led by Dominic Vertue (OAD Fellow) and Prof. Lynn Hendricks (SU), forms part of an ongoing research study investigating the measurable impact of astronomy-related experiences on mental health. A central aim of this trip was to explore how an astronomy retreat might contribute to family cohesion and wellbeing, while deepening understanding of how the awe and beauty of Sutherland’s night skies can inspire reflection and connection.

Rather than structured “astronomy for mental health” activities, the weekend allowed participants to experience the wonder of the environment and to reflect, as individuals and families, on their encounters with the night sky. The programme included community engagement in Sutherland, a visit to the historic “Ou Lokasie”, sunrise walks, and a tour of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT).

The group comprised multidisciplinary individuals and families, including astronomers, public health researchers, social workers, community advocates, and educators, who came together to explore how shared experiences of astronomy can strengthen wellbeing, connection, and a sense of belonging. This gathering marks an important step in developing future astronomy for mental health and wellbeing initiatives and in demonstrating how time spent under the stars can connect us not only to the universe, but to one another.
