Looking Up Together at the End of 2025

By Dominic Vertue

As 2025 came to a close, we had the opportunity to pause and reflect together under one of the most beautiful night sky events of the year. On 13 December, the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development, in collaboration with the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach, and astronomer and mindfulness practitioner, Dr. Mark Westmoquette, hosted the Geminids Guided Meditation as a global online experience.

The intention behind the event was simple. We wanted to create space for people, wherever they were in the world, to step away from the pace of daily life, look up at the night sky, and take a moment to reflect on the year that had passed. By combining the Geminids meteor shower with guided meditation, the event invited participants to connect with astronomy in a more personal and human way.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Mark Westmoquette, whose calm and thoughtful guidance helped shape the experience. While the event was open to anyone globally, it was grounded in the idea of shared presence. Even though participants were separated by distance, they were united by the same sky and the same moment of reflection.

The feedback we received was both comforting and encouraging. Participants shared how much they valued the concept and how meaningful they found the facilitation. Several people expressed a desire for similar events in the future, noting how powerful it was to blend astronomy, reflection, and wellbeing.

We were also moved by responses from those who could not join the live session. Many appreciated having access to the recordings and shared that this allowed them to participate later, whether when the weather was clearer, when family members could join them, or simply when the timing felt right.

As we reflect on this experience, the Geminids Guided Meditation serves as a gentle reminder of the role astronomy can play beyond observation and discovery. It can offer moments of calm, connection, and shared humanity. As we look ahead to the coming year, we hope to continue creating opportunities that invite people everywhere to pause, reflect, and reconnect under the night sky.
