How can we design scalable, astronomy-inspired interventions that integrate mindfulness and psychological insights to enhance mental well-being across diverse communities?
Mental health is a cornerstone of well-being, yet it remains underserved in public health efforts. Astronomy, with its ability to inspire awe and foster connection through the night sky, offers a unique lens for supporting emotional resilience and psychological healing. The Astronomy for Mental Health flagship project at the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) explores how the beauty, vastness, and mystery of the cosmos can cultivate calm, perspective, and collective wellness.
Join us on Friday, 16 May 2025, for the next Astro4Dev Full Moon Mashup, a dynamic online session held at 10:00 AM UTC. This session will bring together astronomers, mental health experts, and innovators to brainstorm creative solutions for leveraging astronomy to enhance mental well-being. Guided by mindfulness practitioner Dr. Mark Westmoquette and chartered psychologist Dr. Christopher Barnes, we’ll dive into how stargazing, mindfulness practices, and psychological insights can intersect to promote emotional health. Expect an interactive, collaborative discussion where your ideas can spark new approaches to mental wellness through the stars.
Be part of the solution! Share your perspectives, propose innovative projects, and help shape astronomy’s role in mental health.
