In 2025, South Africa proudly assumes the Presidency of the G20 under the banner of ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’ – a call for global collaboration to tackle pressing economic, social, and environmental challenges. The G20 presents a powerful opportunity for the scientific community to engage with decision-makers on the role and impact of science in addressing global issues.
Our upcoming Full Moon Mashup will be an open discussion on how the G20 can support science – and how science, in turn, can contribute to shaping inclusive and responsive policy frameworks. At the heart of this conversation lies a crucial question: What message would you like to send to these leaders? What role should science play in shaping global priorities?
We will centre our discussion around a recently published paper by the Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) in Nature Astronomy, which could not be more timely. Entitled ‘Astronomy as a strategic driver for sustainable development’, the paper presents a compelling argument for placing astronomy at the heart of global development agendas – including influential platforms such as the G20.
The publication highlights that astronomy is far more than a study of distant galaxies. It is a powerful driver of skills development, innovation, global collaboration, and inspiration. From data science and education to problem-solving and critical thinking, astronomy provides valuable tools that are urgently needed across multiple sectors of development.
As the G20 and its engagement groups increasingly recognise the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in responding to today’s global challenges, this paper champions astronomy’s rightful place in these conversations. It urges policymakers to harness the unique strengths of space science not only for economic advancement, but also for fostering equity, sustainability, and social progress.
How can global decision-making platforms like the G20 better integrate astronomy and fundamental science into their strategies for inclusive, sustainable development – especially in communities where such opportunities remain out of reach?
And once again: what message would you like to send to these leaders?
The Full Moon Mashups aim to spark exactly these kinds of cross-sector conversations, encouraging astronomers, scientists, educators, and policymakers to think beyond disciplinary boundaries. By bringing together diverse voices under the unifying symbol of the full moon, we create a space for reflection, collaboration, and fresh ideas.
Join us for an inspiring session at the intersection of science, policy, and sustainable development, and discover how you, your work, and your ideas can be part of building a more inclusive future.
