Members of the OAD team participated in the 2025 Annual European Astronomical Society (EAS) Meeting in Cork, Ireland.
Dominic Vertue, Astronomy for Mental Health Fellow, delivered a talk offering astronomers practical tools to navigate common professional and academic pressures. His presentation formed part of a special session titled “Is Balancing Mental Health, Care, and Research Work Possible in Astronomy and Space Science?”
Titled “Navigating Life’s Challenges with ACT,” Dominic’s talk introduced Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a framework for managing difficult emotions and reconnecting with personal passion. Using the “Sailing Boat Metaphor,” he illustrated how identifying one’s core values, your “North Star” and accepting challenging emotions, the “waves in your boat”, can help individuals steer purposefully toward what truly matters, rather than becoming overwhelmed by life’s difficulties.
The talk emphasised the importance of taking small, SMART actions aligned with personal values, providing attendees with actionable strategies to build momentum, resilience, and a deeper sense of meaning in their careers. By framing ACT’s principles within the context of astronomy, the session offered valuable insights for managing the unique challenges faced by professionals in the field.
Additionally, OAD Deputy Director Dr. Charles Takalana and Flagship Coordinator Dr. Joyful Mdhluli contributed to the meeting as members of the Scientific Organising Committee for the Africa-Europe Special Session titled “The Legacy of the IAU-GA 2024 for Africa-Europe Collaborations in Astronomy.”
Dr. Takalana presented an overview of the IAU General Assembly 2024, while Dr. Mdhluli spoke on the global impact of astronomy through the work of the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development. The session also featured representatives from the European Regional Office, the Southern Africa Regional Office, and the Portuguese Language Office, highlighting the ongoing growth of Africa-Europe collaborations in advancing astronomy for sustainable development.
