OAD attends National Astro-Tourism Stakeholder Workshop in South Africa

Members of the OAD team participated in the National Astro-Tourism Broader Stakeholder Workshop held on 2–3 April 2025 in Carnarvon, Northern Cape, South Africa. Hosted by the Department of Tourism and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the workshop focused on the implementation of South Africa’s Astro-Tourism Strategy.

The two-day event brought together stakeholders from across astronomy, tourism, and science to explore the potential of astro-tourism for sustainable development and community engagement. Presentations focused on various aspects of astrotourism both within the Northern Cape province in South Africa, and across the country, with explorations of indigenous knowledge systems.

Day 1 featured various speakers both from the Astronomy and Tourism sectors. Some of the talks focused on introduction to astronomy and impacts of light pollution, training of astroguides as well as tourism in the Northern Cape province. OAD flagship coordinator, Dr. Joyful Mdhluli presented about ‘Community-led Astro-tourism Initiatives’, highlighting the role of local communities in driving sustainable astro-tourism, ways to involve and engage communities in astrotourism and support community-led initiatives. Additionally, OAD Director Kevin Govender provided an update on the IAU General Assembly 2024 and its relevance as one of the astro-tourism strategies’ activities.

Day 1 concluded with the OAD team organising a sunset get-together with the workshop participants. This gathering aimed to showcase the beauty of Carnarvon at sunset and to highlight that astro-tourism goes beyond just stargazing, planetarium shows, and visits to astronomical facilities. Astro-tourism can be a wholesome experience that includes sunrises, sunsets, storytelling, or simply sharing a meal under the stars.

Day 2 featured breakaway sessions focused on the strategy’s three key pillars:

  1. Indigenous Celestial Narratives & Human Capacity Development
  2. Infrastructure Development
  3. Inclusive Tourism Growth & Partnerships

Kevin Govender facilitated discussions on Pillar Three, emphasising collaboration and sustainable growth in the sector. These conversations are critical in shaping the next steps for implementing the strategy.

The workshop offered valuable opportunities for collaboration and input into the future of astro-tourism in South Africa. The OAD was glad to contribute to the ongoing conversations shaping this growing field.
