Connecting Astronomy and Mental Wellbeing in Kimberley, South Africa

On Saturday, October 25, 2025, Dominic Vertue from the International Astronomical Union’s Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU OAD) engaged Grade 9 learners at the Maths and Science Leadership Academy (MSLA) in Kimberley, South Africa in a session titled “Under the Same Sky: Astronomy for Mental Health.” The talk explored how experiences of awe, reflection, and shared curiosity can support wellbeing and a sense of connection.

The session opened with a reflection on Kimberley’s night sky and its rare clarity, inviting learners to think about what it means to look up together. Vertue drew on images of Earth from space and the Milky Way to build perspective and wonder. “You’re literally made of stardust,” he explained, highlighting how the elements that form our bodies were created inside ancient stars. This message of shared origin helped learners reflect on both the science and the sense of belonging that comes from knowing we are all part of the same universe.

In linking astronomy to mental health, Vertue shared stories from community stargazing events in the Northern Cape, where participants described feelings of calm and connection after looking through a telescope for the first time. He introduced learners to simple mindfulness reflections inspired by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), encouraging them to notice what they feel when observing the sky and to identify personal “guiding stars”, values that can help them navigate life’s challenges.

The session concluded with an invitation for learners to see astronomy as an inclusive space for curiosity, community, and wellbeing. Through initiatives like these, the IAU OAD continues to demonstrate how astronomy can serve as a tool for development, offering not only scientific insight but also opportunities for reflection, resilience, and hope.

“To all the staff, volunteers, and learners that joined in, I am so glad to have had the opportunity to talk with you. Thank you for your hospitality and engaging questions.”
