Mark Your Calendar: OAD at APS Physics for Development Series

Dr. Joyful Mdhluli, Flagships Coordinator, will be a featured speaker in the upcoming Physics for Development Colloquia Series, hosted by the American Physical Society’s Forum on International Physics (FIP).

The colloquium will take place virtually on August 28, 2025 at 14:00 UTC, and will focus on the role of astronomy as a tool for sustainable development. Joyful will present insights into how astronomy can go far beyond research and education, becoming a means to address pressing global challenges such as inequality, lack of access to quality education, and limited economic opportunities in under-resourced communities.

Drawing from the OAD’s global portfolio of projects, her talk will highlight practical examples of how astronomy has been used to improve livelihoods, support mental well-being, protect cultural heritage, and empower youth through science engagement. The presentation will also explore how the OAD aligns its work with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how collaboration between scientific institutions, communities, and policymakers can lead to lasting impact.

The Physics for Development Colloquia Series brings together voices from around the world who are using physics and related disciplines to contribute to development, peace-building, and social justice. Joyful’s participation reflects a growing recognition of astronomy’s relevance beyond academia and the importance of inclusive science for a better future.

We look forward to this important exchange and invite all who are interested in science for development to attend.
