1.4 Million Euros

Since 2012, the IAU has granted close to €1.4 million to more than 200 projects, impacting thousands of lives in more than 100 countries. Grants are offered through an annual call for proposals that is open to anyone from anywhere in the world.

One of the primary ways the OAD implements its mission is through the Call for Proposals, which have been conducted annually since 2012. Every year, the OAD invites proposals for projects that use astronomy as a tool to address one or more challenges related to sustainable development. The call for proposals is open to anyone from anywhere in the world*.

*due to international sanctions, we are unable to send money to certain countries. Please contact us if you are unsure about your country.

The OAD Call for Proposals is conducted in two stages, where only a limited number of proposals from Stage 1 will be invited to submit a Stage 2 proposal. The selected teams for Stage 2 work closely with the OAD to improve the impact potential of their project.

An independent review panel, comprising experts from astronomy and development fields, evaluated the applications and made the final selections, which were later approved by the OAD Steering Committee.

Funded Projects

Every year, the OAD receives numerous, good quality proposals that we are unable to support. We compile these projects on to a ‘Recommended List’, which is shared here for the benefit of potential funders.
