CSTERC Women AstroPreneurs’ Collective

Despite higher educational attainment, Indian women face significant barriers to employment, leading to economic disparities and perpetuating poverty. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey by the Government of India, the female worker population ratio in 2022-23 was only 35.9%, with an even lower representation of 21.4% in the manufacturing industry. The CSTERC Women AstroPreneurs Collective (CWAPC) is designed to address this gender gap in workforce participation, particularly in the manufacturing sector. This targeted initiative aims to integrate first-generation female graduates into the workforce by equipping them with the skills needed to produce astronomy products. The project seeks to create sustainable employment opportunities and foster entrepreneurship among women by focusing on this niche but growing market. It actively challenges gender stereotypes by empowering women to excel in traditionally male-dominated technical fields.
Activities: Foundation Program aims to familiarize participants with the program and establish customized learning objectives. It ensures inclusivity and accessibility throughout the training, catering to diverse learning styles and abilities.
Workshops on Telescope Construction: Participants will receive instruction in designing and building telescope components. Sessions on the fundamentals of astronomy and basic sky observation techniques will enhance participants’ understanding of the telescopes they construct. Fire and safety training will also be part of the program.
Retail and E-commerce Market Spaces: We are developing a range of affordable and premium telescopes targeting students, science centres, educational institutions, planetariums, and stationery marts. We will also assemble an affordable astronomy starter pack to broaden our product offerings. To build a consistent customer base, our team is establishing retail outlets through outreach programs and partnerships with tourist attractions and educational institutions. By placing our products in these high-traffic areas, we enhance visibility and accessibility. Profits from sales will directly benefit the participants, paving the way for their long-term financial independence.
Leadership and Entrepreneurial Skills Sessions: In addition to technical training, participants will engage in sessions focused on leadership and entrepreneurial skills to prepare them for managing projects, leading teams, and exploring business opportunities.
The program offers flexible hours and weekend sessions, allowing participants to pursue job opportunities or work while training. After completing six months, participants will receive certification in telescope manufacturing with the option to exit if desired. The curriculum is divided into manageable phases, helping participants achieve milestones while building valuable skills. Upon completing the training, they will have the chance to join the CWAPC providing them with employment opportunities.
